Den indiska delstaten Manipur är hårt drabbad av HIV/AIDS. Drogmissbruk och delade sprutor ledde till att Pradip Kumar fick beskedet att han var HIV-smittad. Efter att bottenläget i sjukdomen motats med medicinering detta valde Kumar att vända på sitt liv. Styrketräningen ledde till framsteg, och nio år senare har han flera bodybuildingtitlar. Nu satsar han för att ta hem Mr India.
Efter att ha vunnit titeln Mr Manipur i klass -60 kg 2007 valde Khundrakpam Pradip Kumar Singh att berätta sin historia offentligt. Detta för att inspirera de många andra smittade i hemstaten till att söka diagnos, medicinera regelbundet och att inte ge upp hoppet:
”I am a HIV-positive person and I came to know that in 2000. Since then I am undergoing anti-retroviral therapy. I appeal to the persons with HIV to accept their status.”
”Every person believes that once you are infected with HIV, you will die. But this is not a fact. If you continue taking medicine on time and have healthy food, you can spend your life in a normal way. This is what I wanted to show to the people.”
”I am here on behalf of all those who are suffering from HIV. In fact, it is not AIDS which kills you, but the response of the society that does you in,” he added.
Dokumentären Mr India ovan är från 2009. Kumar är fortfarande ambassadör för Manipur Aids Control Society och fortsätter att tävla internationellt (Mr Asia och Mr World står på schemat i november/december 2012).
Despite all odds, HIV positive Manipuri muscleman Khundrakpam Pradipkumar has bagged the ”Mr South Asia” title in the just-concluded 9th Mr South Asia Body Building Championship, 2012, held at Ludhiana, Punjab.
